Full-penetration pipe welds, repeatable across every joint

Full-penetration butt welds that passed radiography on every joint in a high-chromium austenitic stainless, by cutting the weld bevel on the tube laser.

The Challenge

A process-piping program needed full-penetration butt welds that would pass radiography on every joint, in a high-chromium austenitic stainless that punishes inconsistent prep. The variable that defeats full penetration on pipe is fit-up.

Our Approach

Weld bevels cut on the tube laser for identical prep across the run, then welded to that prepared joint in a robotic cell under procedures and welders qualified to ASME BPVC Section IX (P-No. 8). Consistent bevel, consistent root.

The Result

Every joint passed radiography against the piping-package acceptance criteria, with the welder and procedure stamped on each weld map.

Client Requirements

A process-piping program needed full-penetration butt welds that would pass radiography on every joint, fabricated in a high-chromium austenitic stainless that punishes inconsistent prep. On pipe, the variable that defeats full penetration is not the weld, it is the fit-up. A bevel ground by hand drifts from joint to joint, and the root fuses differently each time. The requirement was repeatability: the same full-penetration root on the first joint and the last.

Northern’s Approach

We moved the variable upstream. Instead of grinding a bevel by hand on every joint, we cut the weld bevel into each part on the tube laser, so the prep geometry is identical across the entire run. Machine-beveling on a mill would hold that geometry too, but at a cost the part could not carry. The laser-cut bevel does the same thing every time, so the root does too.

The prepared joints were welded in a robotic cell under welding procedures and welders qualified to ASME BPVC Section IX (P-No. 8), with heat input logged against the WPS on every pass. When a program calls for code pressure piping, our Oak Harbor shop is authorized to fabricate to spec under the ASME PP stamp (Certificate of Authorization #63198, shop location only). On corrosion-critical pipe joints, post-weld cleanliness is finished in-house with pickling and passivation per ASTM A380 and A967 to restore the passive layer along every weld.

Outcome

Every joint passed radiography against the acceptance criteria in the piping package, with the welder and procedure stamped on each weld map. The result is full-penetration pipe welds you can prove, joint to joint, without machine-beveling every one. Repeatable prep is what makes a repeatable root, and the prep is settled before the part ever reaches an arc.

Fabricating the Sunset Spectacular

A 67-foot, 100-ton 304L stainless steel monocoque with 72 unique multi-ton panels, sharp corners that ruled out press brake forming, and no two faces parallel. As designed, the structure was considered unbuildable.

Every section was dry-fit against its mating part in the shop and dropped onto the in-plant flanges on the first attempt, with no forced alignment and no field rework.
